Press Release Tidy Towns- Gorey- April. 2010

The Gorey Tidy Towns volunteers were out and about recently. Collecting rubbish and identifying black spots.
The approach roads to the town are a particular disgrace with the ditches littered liberally with bottles, plastic bags, cartons and other items. It seems that the disgusting, filthy and empty headed behaviour of some of our citizens who continue to chuck things out of their cars, continues unabated.
 

The Clothes Bank adjacent to the Fire Station has now become the favourite dumping spot for those who are finished drinking from their Vodka Bottles. A total of 207 bottles were collected from around the Clothes Bank.
Attached photo shows Ger Walsh Chairman of Gorey Tidy Towns in the middle of another litter mess created by some senseless individuals.


Gorey Tidy Towns Committee would appreciate any and all assistance from the general public in helping to identify and out, Litter Louts.
The committee will pursue all Litter complaints reported to it with a view to stamping out this unacceptable behaviour and improving the environment. Please call 087 241 7352 if you have any information that may assist.

The committee will once again approach The Town Council, County Council, FAS and local businesses to determine how a solution can be found to eliminating the aforementioned and any other black-spots and generally providing assistance to Gorey Tidy Towns in their endeavours.

Parishioners are asked to pay for "Mismanagement"

This latest con from the Catholic Church being suggested by Bishop Dennis Brennan
is just not on. Regarding funding of claims associated with child abuse and the planned and methodical cover-up engineered by the "Managers", he had this to say,

Let's not forget Justice Frank Murphy's report in 2005, these things happened in the Ferns Diocese 1960 - 2004

Revolting and repeated abuses perpetuated by priests against children

Over 100 child victims

Over 20 priests identified as perpetrators

Proof that the rape and indecent assault of our young children was well known to the so called
management level within the dioceses - The Bishops.

Proof that these so called managers - The Bishops, knew who the abusers were

Proof that The Bishops with this full knowledge moved their abusing Priests from parish to parish

The Vatican have funds but, Brennan, steeped in denial feels that,

"We (The people of Ferns) should discharge our responsibilities ourselves", “funding sought is not about sharing the blame, it is about asking for help to fulfil a God-given responsibility".

In other words the parishioners of Ferns should pay for the sins of it's Church leaders. The Ferns parishioners should foot the bill for being ruled by unelected incompetent ivory tower managers who committed the crimes outlined above.
Do these fellows not ultimately report up the line to the Vatican? to the Pope. Who is responsible then? they are, he is , let them sort it out themselves. Is it too simplistic to point out to Brennan, that it is his responsibility, and the responsibility of his boss. Let these chaps fulfil their own "God-given responsibilities".

I myself am a regular Church goer and will continue to be regardless of what the current "Management" get up to or what further farcical and insulting behaviour that might emanate from them, however, it is extremely sad that we continue to suffer such disconnect and incompetence from this lot.

The recent letter issued by Bishop Brennan to priests and people of the diocese with requests for financial assistance to pay for their criminal activities indeed sets a precedent and one should not be surprised to see the same strategy employed by other Bishops through the land.

Walking down the town soon after the Bishops announcements I was stopped by several people who expressed incredulity, disgust and bewelderment at this latest turn of events.

We should remember that "We are the Church" and that now is the time to take control back from these guys

Gorey Tidy Towns - Tree Planting

The Tree Council of Ireland is a voluntary non-governmental organisation which was formed in 1985, to promote the planting, care and conservation of trees in both urban and rural areas.

It is the umbrella body linking together 50 organisations connected by their appreciation of trees, and it aims to foster a tree and wood culture among Irish people.

The 7 – 13 March 2010 has been designated tree week 2010

Wexford Town Library are hosting an exhibition "Our Trees" from Tues 3rd March to Sat 20th March ‘10 to mark the event.

Last year the Gorey tidy towns planted 20 trees. This year we hope to do something similar.

Resignation St. Patrick Day's Committee PRO

Ger Walsh today tendered his resignation as PRO from Gorey Town's St. Patrick's Day Committee after a somewhat incomprehensible altercation with an individual committee member who appeared to have assumed the Chair and proceeded to allude to recent newspaper articles in the Star Newspaper and elsewhere. The issue appeared to be that the Committee were not receiving the publicity that they felt appropriate.

Mr Walsh pointed out that he did indeed provide the newspapers with recent updates of the committee's activities, the fact that the papers choose not to publish articles was something that he could not have full control over. To satisfy this committee member, Mr Walsh returned home to retrieve recent correspondence that he had delivered to the papers pertaining to the St. Patrick's Day Committees activities.

He pointed out that several press releases had not been channelled through him, that this prevented the maximising of publicity opportunities and he was no longer prepared to put up with it. The fact that other articles appeared about him was not relevant and should not be relevant to the business of the St, Patrick's Day Committee. Furthermore the Committee would no longer be receiving any financial contribution from him towards their activities.

Disappointing turn-out For Tidy Towns’ AGM

THE COMMITTEE of Gorey Tidy Towns expressed disappointment this week at the poor turnout at its annual general meeting.

The chairman, Ger Walsh, expressed his disappointment at the lack of representation from local business, Gorey Chamber of Commerce and the general public at the meeting.

After a lengthy discussion in which members contemplated disbanding Tidy Towns altogether, it was eventually decided that renewed efforts would be employed to further progress the Gorey Tidy Towns objectives based on the current 3-year-plan Mr. Walsh said in a statement this week following the meeting in the Loch Garman Arms on Tuesday last, February 16 where less than 20 people turned up.

Speaking to the Echo on Monday, Mr. Walsh pointed out that only one public representative was present at the meeting.

“Robbie Ireton was the only public representative at the meeting and while Malcolm Byrne sent his apologies, none of the others were there even though I had written to all of them.”

Mr. Walsh had also written to the Gorey Chamber of Commerce ten days before the meeting, but received a phone call on the afternoon of the AGM to say Gorey Chamber wouldn’t be able to send someone to the meeting because it was too short notice.

“Gorey Chamber’s job is to promote businesses in the town and the cleaner the town the more business it will do.”

Mr. Walsh praised his committee for the work they carried out during the year and the meeting heard there were 1,200 bags of rubbish collected by the Tidy Towns in 2009.

At the meeting, appreciation was extended to Wexford County Council, Gorey Town Council, FÁS, committee members and all volunteers for their continued assistance and support.

The committee also pointed out it is seeking additional volunteers for Saturday work between 10a.m. and 1p.m. where refreshments will be provided. The officers voted in at the meeting were: Ger Walsh (Chairperson); Liz Kenny (Vice Chairperson); Cel Leacy (Treasurer); Mary Porter (Secretary) and committee members Carmel, Pat and Robbie.

The Government's Banking Inquiry

The electorate have clearly expressed their desire for a public enquiry into our Banking structures and mechanisms that have brought us to the financial chaos that our country now finds itself in.

At a recent meeting held in Gorey I asked over 100 participants opinion on whether we needed a public or private inquiry.

Result: 95% Public Inquiry
5% Private Inquiry

The opposition parties and respected commentators have also repeatedly stated that a transparent forum is essential to help restore confidence both nationally and internationally in our Banking Organisations and indeed in the credibility of our Government to lead the country out of the current financial crises.

Many believe that Fianna Fail's Polices, Regulatory inaction and their close and cosy relationship with Developers have been instrumental and directly responsible in bringing us to this unenviable place.

Scare stories about such an enquiry having the potential to adversely impact current investigations by the Gardai and the Director of Corporate Enforcement have been floated by Fianna Fail prior to their announcement of a behind closed doors investigation.

It seems significant that once again the Green Party's John Gormly is sent out to defend the Government's indefensible position.

The Fianna Fail approach which is effectively designed to gain them more Government time, will take weeks to actually define it's own terms of reference and will report far too late to be in any meaningful.
